"Visakha Bucha", the Day of the Full Moon in the month of May, is the most sacred day to millions of Buddhists around the world. It was on the Day of Visakha two and a half millennia ago, in the year 623 B.C., that the Buddha was born. It was also on the Day of Visakha that the Buddha attained enlightenment, and it was on the Day of Visakha that the Buddha in his eightieth year passed away.

His teachings focused on messages about compassion, peace and goodwill. Millions around the world follow the teachings of the Buddha today. The Day of Vesak commemorates Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and death.

 

In 1999, the UN recognized internationally Visakha Bucha Day to acknowledge the contribution that Buddhism, one of the oldest religions in the world, has made for over 2500 years. This day is commemorated annually at the UN Headquarters and other UN offices and missions.

 

Visakha Bucha Day’s Activities

Making merit: Going to temples for special observances, listening to Dhamma preaching, making merit, donations giving, joining other Buddhist activities.

Almsgiving: Offering food to the monks in the morning by putting it in their alm bowl.

Attending candle light processions: Walking around major temples three times clockwise while holding incense sticks, a lighted candle and lotus buds.

Keeping the Five Precepts: Which means for example no alcohol. Additionally, alcohol sale is forbidden for 24 hours in Thailand.
